ATSUTA JINGU SHRINE

Atsuta Jingu Shrine is one of Japan's most important and revered Shinto shrines, located in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. It is dedicated to Ame-no-murakumo-no-Tsurugi, the Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, one of Japan’s Three Imperial Regalia, which is believed to be a sacred sword that was originally possessed by the legendary Emperor Jimmu. The shrine holds deep historical and spiritual significance, dating back over 1,900 years, making it one of the oldest and most important religious sites in Japan.

The shrine’s origins are traditionally said to trace back to the 1st century, during the reign of Emperor Keiko, when the sacred sword was enshrined at the location. Atsuta Jingu is also known as a powerful symbol of Japanese Imperial tradition, as the Kusanagi sword is an emblem of the emperor's legitimacy and divine ancestry. Atsuta Jingu is famous for its beautiful torii gates, traditional shimenawa (sacred ropes), and the large sand-covered grounds, which are used in sacred rituals. Visitors can approach the shrine’s main building through a grand approach (sando), lined with trees and small shrines along the way. The shrine's prayer hall is a popular spot for those seeking blessings for good health, success, and prosperity.

The shrine is also a key center for annual Shinto festivals, especially the Atsuta Matsuri, which is held every June and attracts thousands of worshippers.
