The season is back-where female Nile crocodiles lay their eggs in the park's specially designed nesting areas.
Dubai Crocodile Park has announced the start of its annual nesting season, a fascinating period when female Nile crocodile lay their eggs in specially designated areas within the park.
Experts at the park carefully collect the eggs soon after they are laid, examining each nest meticulously to record details such as temperature, size, and shell quality. This process helps in conservation efforts and provides valuable insights into the health of the crocodile population.
Over the past few weeks, a team of experts has been monitoring the female crocodiles, inspecting nests and collecting eggs. Female Nile crocodiles can launch up to 690 eggs when they strategically choose away from water and make territories to ensure the safety of the eggs. Interestingly, the gender of the temperature within the nest determines the hatchings.
After hatching, the mother crocodile carefully carries her offspring in her mouth to the water, significantly trying to improve their chances of survival. However, the journey from hatching to adulthood is a challenge that accounts for about 1% of wild hatchings typically reaching maturity due to various predators.
"We are currently amid the egg-laying season at Dubai Crocodile Park. Once a year, our females lay their eggs in the sand in special nesting areas for this purpose. Allowing them to complete their reproductive cycle naturally is crucial for their well-being," said Marc Gansuana, head curator at Dubai Crocodile Park.
Tickets to Dubai Crocodile Park are priced at Dh95 for adults and Dh75 for children.
