Passenger numbers in the Middle East are expected to reach 429 million this year, representing almost a 5.4% increase from 2019 figures. Against this backdrop, a panel of aviation experts gathered at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) to explore the evolving aviation landscape and share insights into the future of air travel.
Moderated by travel expert Mark Frary, the session " Looking Skyward for Innovation: How Technology is Disrupting Aviation." featured penalties from Cirium, IATA, AviationXLab, and Riyadh Air. IATA research revealed a 20% increase in international passenger traffic in March 2024 compared to last year.
Regional Director Kashif Khalid, Africa & Middle East, IATA, emphasised the critical role of innovation in accommodating this growth. He highlighted the need for digital solutions to manage passengers and cargo efficiently, citing the One ID initiative as an example. IATA One ID aims to streamline past travel by consolidating numerous travel documents into a single token. He says that this will help exchange security and simplify check-in processes.
Vice President of Product, Cirium, Kevin Hightower, stressed the importance of data sharing in improving efficiency in aviation. He also highlighted the role of technologies like Generative AI in enabling quicker decision-making.
On the contrary, Abe DEV, Vice President of Digital and Innovation at Riyadh Air, discussed Riyadh Air's vision of being the first digital native airline to leverage technologies such as AI and cloud computing to enhance the guest experience.
Aviation X Lab, an aviation-specific incubator based in the UAE, focuses on driving innovation in the sector. Amna Al Redha, Manager, Aviation X Lab, emphasised the importance of a sustainability focus in shaping the future of air travel.
ATM 2024, themed "Empowering Innovation – Transforming Travel through Entrepreneurship," highlights the pivotal role of startups and entrepreneurs in shaping the future of the travel sector.
