Japan and Thailand aim for value and convenience as Chinese tourists' top summer vacation choices.
Japan and Thailand top the list of Asian destinations for Chinese tourists heading abroad this summer. The world's extensive tourist market looks for holidays that provide good value. South Korea and Japan have already seen an upsurge in Chinese tourists after their currencies weakened against the Yuan. At the same time, Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia and Thailand, lure visitors with visa-free entry at lower costs as per Ciirium seat capacity data, flight ticketing analysis from ForwardKeys, and online travel site bookings.
Chengdu resident Amy Li is planning a nine-day trip to Malaysia with her husband and two children. She said pricing was the only factor in selecting Malaysia, where they will visit Kuala Lumpur and its beaches in Kota Kinabalu. "It's good value for money," she added, "I like ocean views, and it is not that far."

The return of Chinese tourists to the global travel market is being closely watched as their numbers and spending are vital for the tourism industry's recovery. Forecasts on when overseas trips by the Chinese will return to the pre-pandemic level vary; some expect that it will rebound fully by the end of this year, while others, including Fitch Group Inc., say that the mainland tourists are still preventing spending. The search data and booking data show that there is increased demand for international travel this summer. trip.com Group Ltd sees outbound travel to China doubling yearly, with family group sales for overseas holidays accounting for half of the current bookings. At the start of this month, the World Travel and Tourism Council said that Chinese holidaymakers would splurge 1.8 trillion yuan ($250 billion) on overseas trips this particular year, thus exceeding pre-pandemic levels for the first time.
Chinese visitors have yet to return entirely to the numbers observed in 2019. Regional destinations for the June to August summer seasons are set to recover to about 80% of 2019 levels, as per the flight ticketing analysis as of June 7 from ForwardKeys. Asian nations that have implemented visa-free policies have seen faster booking growth, with Thailand and Singapore becoming famous weekend gateways, according to Tongcheng Travel, an online agency famous among Chinese users.
Easy Entry
Taking the edge of relaxed visa requirements, Bella Huang is a 27-year-old Jiangsu teacher headed to Thailand in August with two girlfriends. As a big fan of Thai television, this will be her first and only overseas trip this year. Her financial estimate for the journey is about 8000 Yuan. She did not even entertain heading to Europe this year, as she said getting a visa might have been harsh. Still, some European attractions are also expected to share growth, with Belgium, Spain, the UK and Italy topping the list of favoured countries as per the data from Cirium and Trip.com. Tourists and visitors making the extended flight to Europe are also willing to fly comfortably. More travellers headed to Rome, London, Milan, Madrid, Brussels, and Barcelona are splashing out on premium seats than they did in 2019, even as most European attractions in economy class have yet to return to pre-pandemic levels. Nan Dai ForwardKeys China market analyst said, "We have observed a promising upswing in premium and business travel,"
Cordial Tourists Destinations
Some other destinations that are expected to outpace 2019 levels show hints of geopolitical influence. Turkey, Hungary, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Saudi Arabia, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan are among the countries expected to see an upsurge in travel from China, as per Cirium. All are part of China's Belt and Road Initiative. Tourists and visitors to Hungary are expected to jump as flight capacity increases sixfold- the hugest growth of all countries- although off a low base. "Many of these countries are feeling a lot of love for China," said Mark Tanner, managing director of Shanghai-based marketing firm China Skinny. "They are much more China that is adding to the appeal."
